Keeping wonder in the world
Heidi's greatest passion in life is writing and illustrating children's stories. She also creates illustrations and designs for clients like Borders, Shaman Drum Bookshop, the Ann Arbor District Library, the Ann Arbor Book Festival and the Scrap Box.
Her background includes 14 years working in advertising as an art director, copywriter, and designer creating campaigns for Fortune 500 clients. Advertising honed her skills in storytelling, developed an appreciation for brevity and wit, and challenged her to perform under tight deadlines.
After earning a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from College for Creative Studies (www.collegeforcreativestudies.edu), Heidi refined her collage technique with artist, illustrator and teacher John Dinser (www.rockyworld.com). Heidi was also the recipient of a year-long mentorship with children's book illustrator Susan Kathleen Hartung (www.susanhartung.com). One of Heidi’s pictures placed in the Top 10 at the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Conference in New York and most recently, she received Runner-Up for the Don Freeman Grant for Illustrators.
Heidi has written advertising copy for Clock Tower Press, Huron River Press, and the University of Michigan. She also illustrates and designs Jump: Fun stuff just for kids, an award-winning publication for the Ann Arbor District Library. When she's not drawing pictures or writing stories, Heidi enjoys wearing boa constrictors, cracking jokes with her husband Ray, having tea parties with her daughter Lauren, playing with her "spug" (spaniel/pug) Taz and collecting fortune cookie sayings, hoping that her lucky number comes up sometime soon (she would love to be published) — though she realizes in many ways, it already has.
